CITY OF COLTON <br />LIBRARY CLERK ULI <br />DEFINITION: <br />Under the supervision of the Principal Librarian, performs a variety of clerical library and public <br />contact duties and activities which may include checking out, returning and registering library <br />materials; performs a variety of circulation desk and technical services activities; maintains <br />appropriate library work records; and serves as a technical resource for the general public. <br />DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: <br />Library Clerk H <br />The Library Clerk H is the journey level class within the Library Clerk series and is responsible <br />for performing a full range of clerical and public contact library duties and responsibilities at an <br />independent level. Incumbents within this classification are expected to demonstrate a full <br />understanding of all applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned <br />library duties. This classification is distinguished from the lower level classification of Library <br />Clerk I in that it is expected to perform assigned duties with minimal supervision and at an <br />independent level. In contrast, the Library Clerk I receives direct supervision. Additionally, this <br />class is distinguished from the Library Assistant class series in that the latter are paraprofessional <br />classes performing more technical and/or specialized library support activities. <br />Library Clerk, I <br />The Library Clerk I is the entry level class within the Library Clerk series and is expected to <br />learn to perform assigned duties and responsibilities. Incumbents within this classification initially <br />perforin routine and less complex duties and responsibilities, however, steadily receive more <br />complex duties and responsibilities as experience is gained. This classification is distinguished <br />from the ]higher level classification of Library Clerk R in that it is expected to perform assigned <br />duties under direct supervision as they learn their positions. In that this is a learning classification, <br />typically incumbents can reasonably expect to progress to the higher level classification of Library <br />Clerk II after gaining two years of experience. <br />ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (include but are not limited to the following <br />• Performs a variety of clerical library and public contact duties and activities which may include <br />checking out, returning and registering library materials. <br />• Answers directional reference questions and assists patrons in locating materials. <br />• Performs a variety of duties and responsibilities at the circulation desk, checks in all books and <br />audio-visual material, prepares books and materials for processing; evaluates the condition of <br />returned materials and prepares them for return to their designated areas. <br />• Prepares the cash register/drawer following established register procedures and policies; <br />calculates and collects overdue fines from patrons. <br />• Registers and issues library cards to patrons; and checks patron status to verify registration <br />information. <br />• Reviews records and sends overdue notices to patrons who have overdue library materials. <br />• Performs a variety of general office duties including answering the telephone and typing; <br />unpacks, sorts and distributes book shipments. <br />
