CITY OF COLTON <br />LIBRARY ASSISTANT I/II <br />DEFINITION: <br />Under the general supervision of the Principal Librarian, performs and coordinates a variety of <br />paraprofessional library duties and activities including cataloging, selecting and maintaining library <br />materials; promotes library services; maintains appropriate library work records; and serves as a <br />technical resource for the general public. <br />DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: <br />Library 4ssistant H <br />The Library Assistant H is the journey level class within the Library Assistant series and is <br />responsible for performing a full range of library duties and responsibilities at an independent <br />level. Incumbents within this classification are expected to demonstrate a full understanding of all <br />applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned library duties and <br />assist in the training and general supervision of lower level library staff. This classification is <br />distinguished from the lower level classification of Library Assistant I in that it is expected to <br />perform assigned duties with minimal supervision and at an independent level. In contrast, the <br />Library Assistant I receives direct supervision. <br />Library Assistant I <br />The Library Assistant I is the entry level class within the Library Assistant series and is expected <br />to learn to perform assigned duties and responsibilities. Incumbents within this classification <br />initially perform routine and less complex duties and responsibilities however, steadily receive <br />more complex duties and responsibilities as experience is gained. This classification is <br />distinguished from the higher level classification of Library Assistant H in that it is expected to <br />perform assigned duties under direct supervision, as they learn their positions. In that this is a <br />learning classification, typically incumbents can reasonably expect to progress to the higher level <br />classification of Library Assistant II after gaining two years of experience. <br />SUPERVISION EXERCISED: <br />May exercise direct and indirect supervision over clerical and/or volunteer staff. <br />ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (include but are not limited to the following <br />• Performs and coordinates a variety of paraprofessional library duties and activities including <br />cataloging, selecting and maintaining library materials. <br />• Answers a variety of reference and other questions from library patrons; assists patrons in <br />locating materials and using library computer software. <br />• Performs a variety of duties and responsibilities at the circulation desk, checks in all books and <br />audio-visual material, prepares books and materials for processing. <br />• Assigns work to volunteers; monitors work activities to ensure proper work practices, work <br />quality and accuracy; ensures compliance to applicable rules, policies and procedures. <br />
