LIBRARY ASSISTANT I/H CITY OF COLTON <br />Page 2 of 3 <br />• Serves as a Literacy Site Coordinator; schedules and coordinates literacy activities and <br />services with members of the general public; interviews and assesses literacy skills and recruits <br />literacy volunteers. <br />• Monitors program budgets; makes recommendations to higher level library personnel for <br />budget expenditures. <br />• Assists in the training and motivation of volunteers and lower level library staff. <br />• Maintains schedules for performing assigned duties; maintains appropriate work records and <br />documents; prepares statistical reports on work activities as necessary. <br />• Makes recommendations for the selection of library and assigned program materials; assists in <br />the review of new library materials as appropriate. <br />• Coordinates and performs community relations activities; visits classes and public groups to <br />promote the library and its services; makes presentations before public groups and <br />organizations. <br />• May assist in shelving of books, periodicals, videos, cassettes and other library materials; <br />discard old and outdated materials as directed. <br />• Serves as a liaison with book vendors, other organizations and the general public; purchases <br />materials for assigned program or work areas as necessary. <br />• Maintains a variety of information boards, files and records including the vertical file, the job <br />resources board and the public information bulletin board. <br />• Performs a variety of clerical and general office functions including the daily sorting of mail. <br />• May participate in organizational and community group meetings; respond to questions and <br />inquiries. <br />• Operates OCLC terminals and assists in obtaining books and materials from other libraries on <br />loan status. <br />• Performs other related duties as required. <br />WORKING CONDITIONS: <br />Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, <br />bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires <br />grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination in preparing reports using a computer <br />key board. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading written reports and <br />work-related documents. Acute hearing is required when providing phone and counter service <br />;and climbing a ladder may be required. <br />QUALIFICATIONS: <br />Education_ and/or Experience: <br />Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills and <br />abilities necessary for a Library Assistant II. A typical way of obtaining the required <br />qualifications is to possess one year of experience as a Library Assistant I and at least two <br />years of college level course work in Library Science and completion of a specialized <br />college level library technology certificate. A Library Assistant I requires one year of <br />library clerical experience in addition to the college level course work. <br />Lice_ nse/Certi_ ficate: <br />Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid, class C California driver's license. <br />
