0 Year 2000 Issues for the Electric Utility Industry g
Aealyals - faeversPe
• Seam l"c One^m
a
V
Figure 4 - Solving Y2k Problems: The TAVA/R. W. Beck, LLC Solution
The elements of the resolution process referred to in Figure 4 are:
Inventory: Gather the inventory of the utility's plant and facility systems, application
software, operating and infrastructure systems and equipment, and all computer-based
equipment and devices, including embedded systems. Capture and integrate this and any
other appropriate information that could help in making assessments. The structure and
integrity of a full inventory is critical to the success of the Utility Y2k process.
Assess: Once the inventory is completed, determine which elements will be affected by
Y2k. This is crucial to understanding technical vulnerabilities and potential system
failures. The Utility Y2k database provides information about a device with regard to
whether it is Y2k compliant, and significantly decreases the time required for
assessment. This database is the most comprehensive database of components, controls,
utility applications software, and embedded devices in the industry. In addition to the
database, the utility will require engineering analysis and detailed procedures for testing
and resolving the compliance issues with certain items.
Prioritize: Conversion planning begins with the identification of critical applications
and exposures, using the results of the analysis to develop a prioritized strategy for
implementing the necessary systems corrections. Assess both operational and technical
impacts in prioritization and sequencing project efforts. Consider alternative
remediation approaches (upgrade, repair, replace, discard and so forth) to minimize
costs, disruption and time cycles and to support realistic, practical resolution.
Copyright 1998, TAVA/R.
