CITY OF COLTON <br />ELECTRIC UTILITY SYSTEMS DESIGNER <br />DEFINITION: <br />Under the direction of the Electrical Systems Engineer, oversees, reviews and performs work <br />activities and duties assigned to the Electrical Engineering Unit; assumes responsibility for the <br />more difficult and complex tasks of office and field engineering work related to the planning, <br />design and construction of electrical distribution systems. <br />DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: <br />The Electrical Utility Systems Designer is the lead class responsible for preparation and <br />coordination of electric utility engineering projects. This classification is distinguished from the <br />Electrical Utilities Inspector by virtue of the size and complexity of projects assigned. <br />SUPERVISION EXERCISED: <br />Exercises technical and functional supervision over lower level Electric Utilities Inspector and <br />inspection staff. <br />ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (include but are not limited to the following) <br />• Leads, oversees, reviews and performs the work of staff responsible for office and field <br />engineering work. <br />• Participates in the planning for future modifications and system improvements. <br />• Oversees the proper inspection and quality assurance activities of the department relative to <br />electrical distribution system. <br />• Assists in the training of lower level personnel in the areas of work. <br />• Ensures adherence to safe work methods, procedures and practices. <br />• Identifies training opportunities and needs; makes recommendations to higher level staff. <br />• Responds to questions and concerns from the general public; provides information as is <br />appropriate and resolves service complaints. <br />• Evaluates assigned work projects; estimates time, materials and equipment necessary for the <br />successful completion of the project; acquires necessary resources as is appropriate. <br />• Reviews and checks construction plans submitted by developers to determine service <br />requirements. <br />• Designs and prepares construction plans, work orders, and specifications for the installation <br />of underground and overhead electrical distribution systems. <br />• Coordinates, conducts, and participates in planning and pre -construction meetings with <br />developers. <br />• Develops and administers joint pole agreements. <br />• Creates and maintains AutoCAD drawings and systems maps for the City electric utility <br />system. <br />• Participates in the development of policies and procedures; recommends programs, projects, <br />and work assignments to the Electrical Systems Engineer. <br />• Performs other related duties as required. <br />WORKING CONDITIONS: <br />Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, <br />bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily activities.
