fixfWWW1 <br />CITY OF COLTON <br />ASSISTANT CITY LIBRARIAN <br />DEFINITION <br />Under the direction of the City Librarian, the Assistant City Librarian is responsible for <br />professional administrative work in planning and supervising the activities of public <br />services, technical services, and the literacy division of the Colton Public Library. The <br />Assistant City Librarian also performs, as needed, a variety of professional librarian <br />duties for library customers; i.e., reference, selection, cataloging, literacy, etc. The <br />Assistant City Librarian is second in command of the Library and acts in the City <br />Librarian's place in his/her absence. <br />DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: <br />The Assistant City Librarian is a management class responsible for planning, <br />supervising, and performing professional librarian work within all library service areas. <br />This classification is distinguished from the classification of City Librarian by receiving <br />administrative direction from the City Librarian and by providing highly responsible and <br />complex administrative support to the City Librarian. <br />SUPERVISION EXERCISED: <br />Exercises direct supervision over assigned professional, technical, clerical and/or <br />volunteer staff. <br />ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Include but are not limited to the following) <br />• Assume responsibility for assigned sections and activities of the Library Department <br />including adult, audio-visual, automation, children's, reference, and literacy. <br />• Participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies and <br />priorities for assigned programs; recommend and administer policies and procedures. <br />• Monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and <br />procedures; recommend, within departmental policy, appropriate service and staffing <br />levels. <br />• Plan, direct, coordinate and review the work plan for assigned sections and staff, <br />assign work activities, projects and programs; review and evaluate work products, <br />methods and procedures; meet with staff to identify and resolve problems. <br />• Promote and coordinate specific activities within an assigned library program; ensure <br />the preparation of program event and facility marketing material including news <br />releases, flyers, schedules of events, pamphlets and brochures. <br />• Review organizational, budgetary, personnel and operational problems with <br />departmental staff; propose solutions and recommended courses of action. <br />• Select, train, motivate and evaluate library personnel; provide or coordinate staff <br />training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline and <br />termination procedures. <br />
