CITY OF COLTON <br />POWER LINE HELPER <br />DEFINITION: <br />Under the direct supervision of the Line Crew Supervisor, perform routine and less complex <br />tasks and duties assigned to classes within the Power Line Technician series including assisting <br />Power Line Technicians in preparing work sites and appropriate tools and equipment; learn <br />policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties; perform a variety of <br />other duties as required. <br />DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: <br />The Power Line Helper is the entry level class responsible for groundskeeper duties in assisting <br />journey level technicians in electric line work. This classification is distinguished from the <br />classification of Power Line Technician by the performance of routine and repetitive duties <br />setting up work sites and assisting Power Line Technicians. <br />Note: Incumbents in this classification are subject to the Alcohol/Drug Testing requirements of <br />the Department of Transportation. <br />ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (include but are not limited to the following) <br />• Perform a variety of semi -skilled tasks on the ground relating to the installation, repair and <br />maintenance of overhead and underground electrical lines and distribution system equipment. <br />• Assist higher level staff in preparing and handling tools and materials. <br />• Dig holes and set poles. <br />• Install anchors; install crossarms, insulators and bondings. <br />• String electrical lines. <br />• Install service lines. <br />• Disconnect and connect lines. <br />• Assist in the maintenance of street lighting. <br />• Install risers and transformers, install underground conduit and vaults, and underground <br />cables and splice. <br />• Trim trees, and operate trucks, backhoes, and a forklift. <br />• Perform other related duties as required. <br />WORKING CONDITIONS: <br />Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, <br />turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand <br />movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision <br />when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift, carry and push tools, <br />equipment and supplies weighing 25 pounds or more is also required. Additionally, the <br />incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions including wet, hot, and cold. <br />The incumbent may use cleaning and lubricating chemicals which may expose the employee to <br />fumes, dust and air contaminants. The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to climb <br />
