woman Cisneros and Councilmen Lofy and Rehrer for the decision they made
and for sticking to it.
Mr. Martin Vega, 247 West Stevens Street, Colton, spoke in favor of the
proposed Medical Facility, stating he disagrees that this facility will
not create a tax revenue. Mr. Vega said all services will be provided
by the County Medical Center. Mr. Vega then reviewed the costs for
construction of the facility and other related costs. Mr. Vega said
the Council should consider those people without health insurance and
the benefits this facility would provide for them. Mr. Vega concluded
this is not a personal issue, we are here to provide a local facility
for our people.
Mr. Rocky Fredrickson, 2851 South La Cadena Drive, Colton, presented a
Petition containing approximately 50 signatures in support of the pro-
posed Medical Facility in Colton. Mr. Fredrickson stated with regard
to police protection for the Medical Facility, the situation would be
just the same if a shopping center would go in at that location. Mr.
Fredrickson said the comparison is nil. Mr. Fredrickson stated what
about all the benefits that will be provided for our citizens by such
a medical facility. Mr. Fredrickson concluded Colton needs this
hospital.
Mayor Gonzales stated he has received numerous letters and phone calls
in support of this Medical Facility. Mayor Gonzales said he agrees
there are many unanswered questions, however, he felt it would be very
beneficial to sit down with the County, discuss this matter and try to
negotiate with them. Mayor Gonzales stated possibly some of these
mitigation measures can be worked out. Mayor Gonzales felt the City
should let the County know that Colton is definitely interested in this
medical facility. Mayor Gonzales said he represents the people of
this community and wants to try to do the very best for them, and that
was one of the reasons he felt compelled to bring this matter back to
the Council for reconsideration.
Councilman Lofy remarked about a sign in the Council Chambers, held by
a City employee, stating something about personalities. Mr. Lofy said
this has nothing to do with personalities, these were his opinions and
feelings. Mr. Lofy then spoke about the many programs and facilities
he has been involved with and has helped to become a reality. Mr. Lofy
advised that the Council raised the Police Department salaries and other
employees' salaries last year to the tune of $3. million dollars. Mr.
Lofy also spoke about the Mobile Home Rent Control Ordinance that the
City approved for all the residents in mobile home parks. Mr. Lofy ad-
vised the City Council is now faced with a $3. million dollar deficit
that will have to be addressed during forthcoming budget sessions, and
no one on this Council has spoken about employee lay-offs, like other
cities have had to do. Mr. Lofy concluded the City cannot afford to
go further into debt or take on additional costs, and he, as a Council -
member, is not going to put the City in this position at the risk of
letting employees go.
3
AUG 6' 1'9,
